Step 24 - Blown Insulation

There's not much to say about Step 24, but you can't cross this task off your list until the drywall has enclosed the attic.

You can rent the equipment to do this yourself and I think nearly all hardware or home improvement stores have these rigs (see light blue box in photo below)  on site for customer usage.  This is a two person job from the beginning.  You need two sets of hands to get the machine in and out of your vehicle, but most importantly you need two people to get this job knocked out; one person feeding the machine on the ground and the other in the attic controling the hose.

Insulation Blowing Machine w/ Bags of Insulation

There are jobs when it's more practical for me to use batt insulation in the entire house, but when we have blown insulation in the attic, I typically make this part of the agreement with my insulation contractor (see Step 22 - Insulation) and all it takes is a phone call.

This is an important part of any project, but the cost is minimal.

  1. Insulation regulates the flow of heat inside a home. Blown-in insulation is made of treated fire retardant corrugated cardboard and recycled newspaper which eliminate mildew and decay in the interior walls. It is applied through access holes using a blowing machine filling walls, attics and floors.

  2. I agree that doing the insulation is an important task to do. Insulation helps regulate the temperature inside the house by controlling the temperature is going inside and outside the house. Without it, you can expect your utility bill to soar on the roof because you keep using too much air conditioner and heater.

  3. That’s true. When it comes to insulation installation/repair, it’s really wise to hire a contractor. It will give you an assurance that your insulation problems will be solved immediately and properly. Plus, you can ask them to do a thorough inspection afterwards to make sure that there are no further problems with it.
